HOYLE VOTES ‘YES’ ON SOCIAL SECURITY FAIRNESS ACT OF 2023
The Act would increase the earned benefits for 193,235 individuals and spouses in OR-04 currently receiving Social Security benefits

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Representative Val Hoyle (OR-04) voted in support of H.R.82, the Social Security Fairness Act of 2023, which would expand Social Security’s benefits for over 2.7 million Americans.
H.R. 82 would help increase Social Security benefits by eliminating the Windfall Elimination Program (WEP) and the Government Pension Offset (GPO). The WEP currentlyreduces the earned Social Security benefits of two million people who also receive a public pension from a job not covered by Social Security.Additionally, the GPOreduces the spousal benefit for 745,000 Americansalready receiving a public pension from a job that is not covered by Social Security. Today, the WEP and GPO disproportionatelyreduce benefits for many public servants and their spouses.
“As I said on the floor of the House, public employees shouldn’t be punished because they chose a vocation that protects and serves our communities,” Representative Hoyle said. “Their benefits also should not be reduced because of any post-career private sector work. Firefighters, teachers, police officers – and their spouses – deserve the same benefits that trust fund babies or day traders currently enjoy. It’s long past time we repeal the WEP and GPO.”
H.R. 82 is supported by the National Fraternal Order of Police (FOP), International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF), National Active and Retired Federal Employees (NARFE), American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE), International Union of Police Associations (IUPA), American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME), American Postal Workers Union (APWU), American Federation of Teachers (AFT), and the National Education Association (NEA).
